Know Your Woods: Wood Identification in Dendrochronology and Archaeology

Accurate identification of tree species is essential in both dendrochronological research and archaeology. In this practical masterclass, participants will explore the fundamental principles of wood identification based on anatomical characteristics observable at macro- and micro-levels.

During the masterclass:

  • key anatomical features for tree species identification will be examined;
  • common challenges in working with archaeological material will be discussed;
  • the importance of wood identification in dendrochronology will be explained;
  • participants will have the opportunity to work hands-on with microscopes and samples.

Participants are encouraged to bring their own wood or charcoal samples for joint analysis of real cases. Prepared samples will also be provided.
