Honouring new doctoral graduates is a long-standing tradition at universities around the world, and this year the University of Latvia (UL) will host its eighteenth Doctoral Graduation Ceremony. The ceremony has become an important academic tradition honouring our new doctoral graduates and their doctoral thesis supervisors, who have contributed to the advancement of science in Latvia and the strengthening of the academic traditions of the University of Latvia.

This year, the ceremony will take place on 23 September at 15.00 in the Great Hall of the University of Latvia, Raiņa Blvd 19.

Programme of the Doctoral Graduation Ceremony:

  • Opening of the Doctoral Graduation Ceremony;
  • Address by the Rector of the University of Latvia;
  • Address by the Chairperson of the UL Council;
  • Address by the Vice-Rector for Research and presentation of Honour Badges to doctoral graduates;
  • Address by the Director of the Doctoral School;
  • Address by a representative of doctoral thesis supervisors;
  • Address by a representative of doctoral graduates;
  • Congratulations to doctoral graduates and official photographs.

Registration for the ceremony is open until 1 September 2026 by completing the electronic application form.

Graduates who obtained their doctoral degree in the 2008/2009 academic year or later are not required to submit a copy of their diploma. Graduates who obtained their doctoral degree at the University of Latvia prior to the 2008/2009 academic year are kindly requested to submit or send electronically a copy of their diploma when registering for the ceremony to Linda Dambeniece-Migliniece by e-mail at linda.dambeniece-migliniece@lu.lv.

Additional Information:

  • Doctoral graduates are invited to gather 30 minutes before the ceremony at the main building of the University of Latvia in Riga, Raiņa Blvd 19, near the entrance to the Great Hall (2nd floor, via the cloakroom), in order to sign for the receipt of the Honour Badges and receive detailed information regarding the ceremony;
  • If you are unable to attend the ceremony, please inform us in advance by e-mailing linda.dambeniece-migliniece@lu.lv;
  • The Doctoral Graduation Ceremony will last approximately two hours.
