Total Project Funding: EUR 19,236,780 (EUR 11,409,231 allocated for internal consolidation and EUR 7,827,549 allocated for external consolidation)

Project Objective:
To ensure the achievement of the vision and strategic goals set out in the University of Latvia Strategy 2021–2027 by developing the University as an internationally recognised research centre, advancing a unique study offer that ensures high graduate competitiveness, and making a significant contribution to Latvia’s growth.

Objective of External Consolidation:
By 31 August 2025, to integrate BA School of Business and Finance into the structure of the University of Latvia and, within three to five years, to develop it into an internationally recognised business school in the Baltic Sea region.

Objective of Internal Consolidation:
To implement structural changes at the University of Latvia by concentrating its academic potential primarily within five faculties and introducing a new governance model that ensures the necessary capacity and support for the creation and transfer of new knowledge, while strengthening excellence in studies and research.

Planned Project Activities:

  • Implementation of structural reforms for external and internal consolidation;
  • Digitization;
  • Technology development and improvement of research and education infrastructure;
  • Development of new study programmes tailored to future challenges and thematic specialization;
  • “Exit” grants and research capacity grants.

Results of Research Capacity Grants:
Support for the academic activities and implementation of research and development projects of doctoral students, applicants for a doctoral degree, postdoctoral researchers, and researchers (professors).

European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) provides funding to public and private bodies in all EU regions to reduce economic, social and territorial disparities. The Fund provides assistance to the less developed regions, focusing mainly on improving public infrastructure and promoting entrepreneurship.

ERDF funding is intended for the following measures:

  • business environment development and competitiveness growth, especially for small and medium-sized enterprises;
  • preservation of the local economy, including tourism and cultural heritage;
  • research and technological development;
  • development of local, regional transport, telecommunications, energy networks and the infrastructure relevant to them;
  • environment protection and development;
  • increasing the potential in research, science and technology, etc.

     

“Strengthening the Research and Development Capacity of Doctoral Studies at the University of Latvia in Smart Specialisation Areas”

Project Cooperation Partners: BA School of Business and Finance; Latvian Biomedical Research and Study Centre; Institute of Solid State Physics, University of Latvia; and Institute of Mathematics and Computer Science, University of Latvia

Project Implementation Period: 56 months (1 March 2025 – 31 October 2029)

Total Project Funding: EUR 5,556,906.88
The planned co-financing from the European Regional Development Fund is EUR 4,723,370.85, and the state budget contribution is EUR 833,536.03.

Project Objective:
To strengthen the capacity and excellence of the academic research and development human capital of the University of Latvia in smart specialisation areas by promoting the preparation of a larger number of doctoral degree holders with appropriate knowledge, skills, and competences, as well as increasing the capacity of research-involved personnel.

Main Project Results:
Research implementation positions established within the supported structures, and at least 91 doctoral students recruited.
